Its keepers praised its history, polished its name, and guarded its doors, while fewer souls found reason to enter. 3. For tradition without renewal becomes memory, and memory worshiped too long becomes a tomb. 4. Yet the answer was not to destroy the house, for good timber remained within it, and beneath the dust the foundation still remembered its purpose. 5. What was needed was not another keeper of the old rooms, but one willing to open the windows, move the tables, and let unfamiliar voices sit among the familiar. 6. For no house is strengthened by becoming smaller, nor any people made greater by demanding that every neighbor speak with one tongue. 7. Then arose a voice from beyond the favored halls, owing little to their customs and therefore fearing little of their displeasure. 8. And the old ones asked, “By whose permission is this done?” Yet the people asked another question: “Why was permission ever required?” 9. For there comes an hour when preserving a thing requires changing it, and loyalty to its purpose demands disobedience to its decay. 10. The divided house shall not be healed by choosing which half deserves to remain. It shall be healed when those within remember that the house was built for more than themselves. 11. And what appeared to be an ending became resurrection: not the death of what came before, but the return of its better nature— renewed, widened, humbled, and made young again. 12. So it was written: when an old house has forgotten the people it was raised to shelter, let another generation take up the tools. Keep what was righteous. Remove what became rotten. Build what was missing. Open what was closed. And let those who were told there was no place for them become the reason the house stands another hundred years. The old shall not be worshiped merely because it is old. The new shall not be feared merely because it is new. Let what is worthy endure. Let what is broken be restored. And there came a generation eager to remove what had failed them, and much of what they condemned deserved to fall. 2. Yet in their anger against what stood before them, few asked what would stand there afterward. 3. For nothing removed leaves only emptiness. Where one stone is taken away, another must bear its weight. 4. And where one voice is silenced, others will rise to fill the quiet. Where one law is broken, another order will take its place. Where one belief is abandoned, something else will teach the heart what to believe. 5. Thus destruction is the easier wisdom. Any hand may tear down a gate. Few possess the patience to build one that opens more freely and still protects those within. 6. Beware therefore of those who speak endlessly of what must be destroyed, yet cannot describe what they intend to build. 7. For a people may remove one burden and discover that two were waiting beneath it. They may break one chain only to forge another from its pieces. 8. And sometimes what replaces the old evil does not arrive wearing the face of evil. It arrives promising relief. It calls itself necessary. And because the people remember what they escaped, they fail to examine what they have welcomed. 9. Therefore judge change not only by what it removes, but by what it creates. Ask not merely, What are we being freed from? Ask also, What are we becoming? 10. For progress is not movement alone. A traveler walking toward the cliff is still moving forward. 11. Blessed therefore are those with courage enough to change what is wrong, and wisdom enough not to destroy what was right beside it. For the future belongs neither to those who preserve everything, nor to those who tear down everything, but to those who can tell the difference. 12. So it was written: before removing the stone, know what shall carry its weight. Before extinguishing the light, know what shall guide the darkness. And before destroying what generations have built, look beyond the victory of its falling— for every empty place shall be filled, and the two things invited tomorrow may prove heavier than the one thing cast out today.

For the stranger still carried his wounds, the neighbor his anger, and each believed his suffering greater than the other’s. 3. Then it became known that no law could command a heart to love, nor could any ruler decree compassion into being. 4. A thousand laws may restrain the hand, yet none can make it reach toward another. 5. For righteousness does not begin where punishment is threatened. It begins where a person could choose wrong, and chooses what is right instead. 6. Blessed is the one who possesses power and does not use it to humiliate. Blessed is the one who has been wounded and refuses to make another bleed. 7. For vengeance is easily inherited. One generation teaches its anger to the next, until children fight battles whose beginnings they can no longer remember. 8. Somewhere, therefore, someone must become brave enough to inherit the wound without inheriting the hatred. 9. Let that one feed the hungry without first asking whom they followed. Let that one shelter the frightened without asking which side they stood upon. Let that one hear another’s sorrow without preparing an answer before the tears have dried. 10. For humanity shall not be made whole when everyone finally agrees. It shall begin to heal when disagreement is no longer permission to stop loving one another. 11. And perhaps the promised land was never hidden beyond some distant horizon. Perhaps its gates have always stood where pride ends, where mercy begins, and where one human being finally looks upon another and recognizes himself. 12. So it was written: no kingdom shall be made righteous by command, for righteousness must first awaken within the people. And when one chooses mercy where hatred was easier, truth where belonging demanded silence, and love where division offered reward, let it be known that the resurrection has already begun— not upon the earth around them, but within the human heart.
